My slippers are dying. The top of one slipper is separating from the base and the soles of both are bottoming out (ha). But winter is almost over and, reluctant to spend money, I thought I might be able to push through until the fall. Hoping to keep it together — literally — I placed an order for Gorilla tape.
And then it occurred to me: winter slippers might be on sale; now might actually be the better, more frugal, time to buy them. However, a quick L.L.Bean search revealed that no, prices weren’t slashed (yet). So this morning my husband taped them back together.
Only one slipper needed to be fixed but, once taped, it felt so much better — it gripped my foot with renewed vigor and silenced my annoying shuffle-walk — that I had him tape the other one to match.
Problem is, I’m beginning to detect a little stickiness when walking on the kitchen tile and I HATE the feeling of sticky floors.
So I’ve come full circle: I still need to buy slippers, and now. I assumed I’d spring for another pair of L.L. Beans, but then I read that some people really liked wool slippers. Now that I have (and love) a pair of wool Merinos, I’m considering the splurge. I especially like that wool slippers look like shoes; I think they’d help me feel a little less lounge-y, a little more put-together. (I’m partial to these.)
I’m getting ready to start researching, but thought I’d check in with you first (and maybe save myself some time): Do you have a favorite pair of slippers to recommend?
My slipper requirements include:
*Durable soles, so I can wear them inside and outside.
*Warm, but not so much that I overheat.
*Long-lasting: with any luck, I’ll be wearing them daily, for years.
*Lightweight (the ones I currently have are a little too clunky).
*Slip-on, but not clogs, so: closed heel, I guess?
*Fur is okay, but I’d rather not look like I’m wearing small mammals on my feet.

I bought Glerups and within a year my toes had worn a hole through them on both feet! Ugh. I also did not find them very supportive on my hardwood floors. I use Teva ReEmber as slippers. They have actual soles so I can walk outside when I need to. I accidentally forgot to swap shoes the last time I went to the library, too, and wore these.

Following! This winter I splurged on a pair of Glerups (low top, leather sole) from LLBean. Love them, but can’t wear them outside. They are great with or without socks. Note they run large. I also have a pair of MukLuk booties that are super cute but the synthetic fur makes my feet sweat when sockless.

Bearpaws brand. The ones I have are tan suede with fake fleece(doesn’t look like dead animal) good sole to wear outside if needed. The first pair I bought lasted six years with frequent use. Bought both pairs at Big 5 for about $20, sale at Christmas. Also the slipper cuff can be pulled up to cover the ankle in colder weather.

A vote for Glerups. My husband got me a pair for my birthday a few years ago and I wear them constantly inside during the cold half of the year. They’ve held up great–still look and feel just as good as always. One of the seams came unsewn last year but I was able to sew it back and it’s been fine since. *Durable soles, so I can wear them inside and outside. – I don’t wear mine outside (no outside shoes allowed on our floors!) but no holes or wear from months of constant daily indoor wear.

I had a pair of Stegmann wool clogs that I loved, and that lasted for years. I replaced them with a pair of Haflinger clogs that are basically identical, but don’t seem to have held up as well.

Birkenstock Amsterdam! I used to love the LL Bean ones, but the shearing insides would wear out so fast, and I get plantar fascitiis if I don’t have really good support. Birkenstock Amsterdams are great, not too hot, good with bare feet or socks and come in narrow widths.

I got a pair of Glerups for Christmas and so far I love them. Have never loved slippers because they always make my feet sweat, but these have been great so far. They are lightweight, conform to your feet, and I have the rubber sole and I can confirm that they are quite adequate for inside and outside wear.

I wear slippers a lot since I am retired, and I am very partial to moccasin slippers with a rubber sole. I wear them out in the yard, in the house, everywhere. And the ones I buy are expensive, never on sale, but they last several years for me. And they can be resoled if you have a cobbler anywhere nearby. I am quite partial to these, but they may not be at all what you are looking for. I have also bought the sheepskin lined ones, but the sheepskin does wear down over time, and it cannot be replaced, so they are not as practical.

Well, I have quarry tile floors in a lot of my house, and they are warm enough with wool socks, but if you have very cold floors, then I would recommend the sheepskin lined ones. I must admit that I wear those sheepskin ones year round when I have them, but I have cold feet, Or you could buy the ones without sheepskin and buy sheepskin insoles for them that you could take out if your feet get too hot in the summer. They are very sturdy slippers. I have worn them to run errands, and I think they look fine with jeans. I am partial to the deerskin ones that really conform to your feet. I have looked for cheaper ones in this style, but I have always been disappointed in them. Have you looked at any Minnetonka slippers? I don’t like them as well, but I do have a pair of Minnetonka moosehide mocs that I really like. I can’t remember what the return rules on the footskins since I have never returned a pair. I hope you find some slippers you love. I find they are my most important footwear buy for my lifestyle.

I bought some new house shoes a week ago because my old ones were too loose and I was afraid of stumbling (which could cost a lot more than what I paid for these I rationalized). They are pricy but I haven’t had such comfortable foot gear for at home, maybe ever. I had to swallow my pride about getting orthidic shoes but I’m over that. I just bought a replacement for my five year old LL Bean cat-themed daybreak scuffs that were starting to fall apart. I didn’t want to spend the $65 for the same style, so I bought the $50 sweater fleece slipper scuffs instead. They have enough of a lip on the back to hang onto my feet, but not so much that I can’t easily slip them on. They’re quite cushioned and comfortable.
