• Monday mini bites

    Mini Bite #1: today’s lunch
    Leftover lovelies: mashed potatoes, corn, peas, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, sour cherries, meatloaf, and salad. Sometimes I am in awe of my children’s appetites.

    Mini Bite #2: foreclosed cherries
    Someone didn’t pay the rent on their freezer locker so the contents (sour cherries) were going to be emptied into the landfill. Some other people, smart ones, salvaged them. We got 70 pounds for 20 bucks.

    Mini Bite #3: Pi Day
    It’s Pi Day, you know: March 14 equals 3.14.

    I’m making a—you guessed it—sour cherry pie. And perhaps a cherry cobbler, too.

    I have no idea what we’ll have for supper.

    Mini Bite #4: camera happy
    I’ve been reading through PW’s photography tutorials and then spending a lot of time sitting in the yard puzzling over the buttons on my camera. I let my daughters take some pictures. There’s this one.

    They’re overexposed, I know, but I really am learning new things.

    And then, in exchange for letting me take pictures of him, I let Nickel take a picture of me.


    Mini Bite #5: glorious poop
    Our neighbor brought us a truckload of poop.


    It made me really, really happy, especially considering that just that morning my husband and I had had a mild argument over the lack of garden fertilizer and how the said lack of fertilizer ought to be remedied. But then the neighbor showed up with the poop and all was well.

    Mini Bite #6: airborn
    After surgery, the nurse told Nickel that he wasn’t allowed to run around the house for the rest of the day. He grinned at her cheerfully and then, once he was de-IVed, said he had to go to the bathroom and took off at a fast trot. There is no stopping this kid. Here are a few pictures of him in action, all taken within 36 hours of his surgery. In fact, he’s still wearing the clothes he wore to the hospital.


    Mini Bite #7: curry
    I made a chicken curry that my whole family likes! This is a classic curry—one that’s perfect for adorning with all sorts of yummy condiments.


    Golden Chicken Curry
    Adapted from a hand-me-down cookbook: The Flavors of Bon Appétit 2000

    the meat from one cooked chicken, chopped
    1 hearty glug of oil
    2 or 3 large onions, chopped
    1/4 cup minced, peeled fresh ginger
    3 garlic cloves, minced
    3 tablespoons curry powder
    1 teaspoon cumin
    ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    2 tablespoons flour
    1 cup plain yogurt
    3 tablespoons tomato paste
    3 cups chicken broth
    1 cup applesauce
    1 10-ounce (2-3 cups) packaged frozen peas
    ½ cup sour cream
    ½ cup coconut milk
    salt, to taste

    Toppings: cilantro, green onions, chutney, chopped bananas, raisins, chopped peanuts or cashews, coconut, etc.

    Sauté the onions in the oil till they’re translucent and tender. Add the ginger and garlic and sauté one minute. Add the curry, cumin, cinnamon, and flour and sauté one minute more. Add the yogurt and tomato paste, stir until thick, and simmer for one minute. Add the broth and applesauce, bring to a boil, and then simmer for a few minutes. Add the chopped chicken and peas and heat through. Remove the kettle from the heat and stir in the sour cream and coconut milk (you may continue to heat, as needed, but do not boil). Taste to adjust seasonings.

    Serve the curry over rice, with a smattering of condiments.

  • For all we know

    So I called Auntie Anne’s to find out if they use lye to make their pretzels and the woman said yes. But when I pressed for more information—what percent solution? dipped or sprayed?—she said she’d need to refer me to one of the food scientists.

    The food scientist called me back yesterday. She said that whether or not they used lye was a proprietary issue so she couldn’t tell me.

    “You mean you can’t tell your customers what the actual pretzel ingredients are?” I asked incredulously.

    “No,” she said, in her measured, I’m-practically-a-computer voice. “Unless you have some allergy that you want to ask me about specifically.”

    “Um, are people ever allergic to sodium hydroxide?”

    She hesitated, then, “No, not that I’m aware of.”

    “Well, okay then. Thanks.” And I hung up, disgusted and peeved.

    So there you have it, straight from the food scientist’s mouth: the ingredient list on commercial food products is a bunch of bull malarky. They might be dunking all our food in poison, for all we know.

    Tonight’s supper: soft pretzels, apples, cheese, beer (none of us like beer, but still, pretzels need beer, right?), and ice cream. What are you having?

  • All by himself

    Turns out, I was a bit more anxious than I realized. I hardly slept a wink last night. I saw the clock several times each hour, sometimes more. I had two dreams that I remember. One was that I decided to wash my hair before leaving for the hospital, stuck my hair (but it was clothes) in the washing machine, and then realized that the cycle would take an hour and I wouldn’t be ready on time. The other dream was that I was in a barn, and in order to get out, I had to go by a large pig which turned into a slobbering cow that charged me and nipped my ponytail. It was a miserable night.

    However, my crazy, middle-of-the-night fretting aside, the surgery went perfectly fine. The nurses made a huge to-do over Nickel, giggling at his red toenails and tweaking his cheeks while he just sat on the bed and smiled. He smiled at the anesthesiologist, he smiled at the doctor, and he smiled at the earring-sporting, lizard cap-wearing, Monty Python-quoting male nurse.

    When it came time for him to walk to the OR, he wanted me to go with him. As we walked towards the OR doors, I explained I wasn’t allowed to go any further, but, Look, why don’t you push that big button over there to open the door? All right, now give me a kiss. See you later, sweetie! And off he walked, the lizard-crowned nurse at his side. Not wanting to watch him leave, I promptly spun off in the other direction. I needed coffee, and a bagel.

    After an hour-plus, the doctor came out to the waiting room to give me The Report and a little sliver of tooth in a cup. After filling me in on the surgery, she informed me that Nickel walked into the OR all by himself, got up on the table and breathed right into the mask. She was quite impressed. I was relieved. I thought he’d probably do fine, but still, you never know.

    When a nurse called me back into recovery, Nickel was sitting up in bed, crying.


    There was a little blood in his nose and his voice sounded all raspy. He locked his arms around my neck and sobbed. I patted his back for a little and then asked him to please let go—he was choking me.


    He said his forehead hurt, so we cut the lights and put a cloth over his head.


    He slurped at his florescent popsicle while I knitted.


    When he got grouchy about the scratchy blood pressure cuff on his ankle, I climbed up on the bed and rubbed his feet while we entertained ourselves by watching the unconscious people roll by on gurneys and listened to the other kids wake up from their surgeries (one had a hard time of it— the little guy kept holding his breath and turning gray).


    Once disconnected from wires and pressure cuff, Nickel trotted over to the nurses’ station to return the clipboard he used for coloring the pictures and to give his nurse a good-bye hug. And on our way out the door, we saw one of his check-in nurses. She beamed at him and then turned to me, her eyes wide, “I heard he walked into the OR all by himself! What a kid! Wow.”

    Back home, he showed off his silver tooth to the other kids and then called his Grandmommy to fill her in on the morning’s excitement.


    It wasn’t till lunchtime that I thought to get a mirror so he could see his shiny tooth himself. He was intrigued, and he carted the mirror to rest time so he could further study his fancy-schmancy dental work.
